Blakely Harbor Residence
The design solution explored the themes of privacy, discovery and opportunity. The approach to the house is defined by heavy, monolithic walls which provide a barrier to, and privacy for, the interior spaces. Minimal penetrations in these walls offer a glimpse of the interiors from the approach and defined views to the outside landscaping from within. Passing through these walls, the interior spaces gradually emerge, as well as the views beyond. The house is "strung out" along the shoreline as a series of building pods connected by a circulation spine along the back side of the house. These are stepped and oriented to maximize the view to the water and downtown Seattle, and to create sheltered outdoor spaces. A continuous deck that stretches across the water side of the residence connects these pods and provides a large outdoor area for use by the owners.
