Representing a time-honored tradition, this new winery offers a fresh interpretation that respects the client’s love of modern architecture, advanced technology and winemaking. The experience creatively melds production with hospitality to celebrate the entire sequence of events in winemaking (vine, vat, barrel, bottle, table) in a distinctly Washington State way.

The unlikely site, stretching along a busy thoroughfare and sloping down to a wetland, is used to the project’s functional and aesthetic advantage. Building into the hillside preserved natural habitat and keeps the wine cool as it ages. The long, linear concrete walls signify the rows of a vineyard and direct views to a world-class garden that are brought into the tasting room through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The space is spare to keep the focus on wine. Interior finishes match those in the shell. Concrete was selected for its modern aesthetic, durability, ease of maintenance and health purposes, meeting stringent winery health codes. Natural lighting and ventilation save energy.

Using biophilic principles, the design surprises and delights and elevates the human spirit. A number of serendipitous elements appeal to a variety of senses and encourage visitors to explore. Spaces range from large open areas to small, intimate nooks, offering prospect or refuge.

Outside, selected plantings establish sun, shade and wetland terraces to represent the grapes’ journey from the high arid plains of eastern Washington to the greener west coast. Interior details align the quality of the space with the quality of the wine, offering a sense of place, discovery and memories.
