Bainbridge High School 200 Building
A new front door for the Bainbridge High School campus, the 200 Building serves as a bridge to the community. Its strong relationship to and transparency from the street celebrates the civic nature of education and reinforces connection with place.
Inside, public and private functions are organized around a double-height gallery that links the building vertically and encourages collegial interaction. Administration, library and commons unfold from this core as the building steps down a terraced slope to the west. Above, classrooms capture balanced daylight and distant vistas of downtown Seattle, and the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges.
The new building enriches and extends the school and close-knit island’s shared commitment to education and environmental sensitivity.
The 200 Building is a model for sustainable design and resource management that teaches with each contact; extensive low-impact stormwater strategies, 18,000-square-feet of green roof visible from upper level classrooms, and natural ventilation throughout the facility engage students and the greater public in learning about ecological systems and sensitive development.
