Hinoki House
The Hinoki House project is located on a hillside in a 1950's suburban development which is undergoing rapid redevelopment.
The project began with three primary challenges:
1.) to integrate design and a high level of craftsmanship with the challenges presented in fitting into a suburban eclectic neighborhood
2.) to utilize technologies of construction and selection of materials that maximize both the beauty of the structure and its sustainability
3.) to create a place of refuge and peace for its inhabitants, one with a strong connection to the landscape
In response to these design challenges, the client and the architect, early on verbalized and built upon the following guidelines for the project:
1.) the design would seek to be quiet in form, scale, and material selection
2.) the building height would not be maximized for view
3.) a green "living roof" would be incorporated into the design
4.) all interior habitable spaces would allow movement to exterior garden spaces
5.) building materials would be selected for longevity of performance
6.) the floor plan would be "open" in design with a distinct separation between public and private spaces
These guidelines were met with the Hinoki House design, producing a quiet home, that fits to the neighborhood, is constructed of sustainable materials, and provides a meaningful life experience for its owners.
