In an effort to restructure the educational delivery model, the School Board recognized it needed a system that provided the benefits of a small school atmosphere in a larger school shell. Rather than processing students through learning stations in a linear fashion, this 1,500 student school is divided into four distinct personalized learning centers (PLC’s).

The Cavelero Mid-High has developed an educational philosophy that focuses on the new 3 R’s: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships. Elevated expectations result in high performing learning environments that challenge the mind (Rigor), integrated applied science areas make students employable (Relevance), and supportive learning environments foster a bond between student and teacher (Relationships).

The Big Idea is a reflection of the change in educational delivery. The old paradigm had a central spine that connected double-loaded corridors of classrooms. This school slices through that convention. The “slice,” a shed roof form, contains the more public spaces such as the administration, event spaces, the library and the commons. The old paradigm has been “split” by the cutting edge forming four separate 375 student PLC’s.

The site orientation of the school takes maximum advantage of day-lighting. Each learning center allows light to be borrowed in the classroom and serves as the air plenum for the displacement ventilation system. Displacement ventilation allows heated and cooled air delivered at the floor to rise naturally when heated. Using heat exchangers, the system uses 100% outside air, for increased health benefits while providing energy efficiency.
